What is Copyediting?
Copyediting is the process of reviewing a draft of a document or manuscript to reveal and correct content and style errors. Copyeditors ensure that the document is clearly written, uses the correct style, and is grammatically accurate. To do this, a copyeditor must read every word of the document or manuscript and pay close attention to every detail. Following are some of the items that may be included in a copyedit:
- Read document word-for-word.
- Make suggestions to improve the clarity and quality of the language.
- Check for run-on sentences, wordiness, sexist language, awkward constructions, vague language, and passive voice.
- Check for proper copyright and trademark usage.
- Insert suggestions regarding items such as misused technical words, inappropriate content or tone, major organizational problems, and awkward or confusing passages.
- Check cover, title page, and copyright page for consistency.
- Check that abbreviations and acronyms are used correctly.
- Check for spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors.
- Check front matter for appropriate copyright information and date, acknowledgments, table of contents, list of conventions and trademarks, when appropriate.
- Check Table of Contents and Index for accuracy, completeness, and consistency.
